Script Writing Utility

Post by milo christiansen »

I plan on making a script writing utility as my next programing project and I ran across a link to some thing called the WZSW which purports to be a script writer. Unfortunately the link was broken but now I'm curious, What features does it have? how well did it work? and where can I get a copy of it? I still plan on writing my own, but you can sometimes learn a lot by looking at the competition. :lol2:

Here is a preview exe

you will need some QT dlls these can be acquired by getting QT(not recommended) or downloading the package linked to later in this thread (easier).

In general, if you see glowing, pulsating things in the game, you should click on them.

There are 2 WZ AI Script Writing Utilities. One for SKI and the other for CAM Missions. You do not need to hand write or construct scripts with these or really know the script language deeply.

Did you want both ? Screens below.

There is also Niker's VSC (VLO & SLO Compiler) v2.50 which you can still DL here - it is more to help speed-up the script writing process - you need to know the language, unlike the other 2 above:

If you don't, you will soon. :)

Both are of limited use with the current binary - mostly for learning.

Both are fairly weak too as far as complexity of end result constructs..

Based on what Milo has already done (& is doing) with Fast Play Mode scripting modularization & tuts - I can already tell you that his Utility will be way more powerful. And also, his utility will achieve a popularity & usuage that these other 2 editors never really attained.

Some things to bear in mind...

1.) The original CAM is over 10 years old & peeps over all these years have yearned for new CAM Missions to play but working to create New Missions within the CAM structure has proven too daunting. Milo's work changes all that.

2.) While we have had some outstanding SKI A.I.'s like DYDO - that gets played out because it becomes predictable & lacks the power of a narrative thrust. Milo's work will bust-out of that dual impasse.

3.) The Net MP experience as it stands is NOT for a great many fans of the game. They much prefer SKI & CAM. Again, Milo's work will address that audience by greatly facilitating the creation of fresh, new, CAM GP experience.

4.) While I deeply appreciate the value of all the new art, fixes, added features, flaME, Diorama & re-balancing milestones..... this effort of Milo's will open wide the doors to fresh & innovative WZ game play like nothing heretofore has. It's that seminal, IMHO.

Um.. No. It will be a glorified editor whose only real function will be to keep the vlo and slo synced, at least at first, since that's my main complaint about using notepad++. Later when I'm not so busy I may add more features but this is not, and will not be a re-write of WZSE. I actually tried the WZSE and dislike it. Most things you can do in it can be done faster by hand.

A list of all planned features:
Syntax highlighting
vlo/slo will be automatically synced
Good looking, structured output
Interleaving arrays will also be suported
(e.g.
Test1[0]
Test2[0]
Test1[1]
Test2[1]
...)
In general, if you see glowing, pulsating things in the game, you should click on them.

I assumed this was connected to what you are doing with FastPlay Mode. My bad.

I'm infering you already looked at VSC ?

It is. At least in the way that that was the inspiration.

Yes, but it has no documentation so I have no idea how to use it, or what its supposed to do. As far as I can tell its just side by side editors with no syntax coloring or anything.

I see. I thought a more literal and specific manifestation of your FastPlay work in the form of an editor.

Your going for something more like the Codeweaver editor for Torque Script Dev: http://www.torquedev.com/ seems like.

I'll post a GUI only copy soon so people can see what it will look like. The only thing that you will be able to directly edit is event bodies, everything else will be done with dialog boxes.

Cool. That will likely dispel my cognitive dissonance. :lol2:

Here's an gui only exe.

This requires some dlls that are NOT included, they are part of this package though, so get that and ether extract the dlls with 7zip or install it and put this exe in the program folder with the dlls.

most of the buttons down the sides of the vlo and slo tabs will open a dialog box in the final (working) version.

When you say that you got it, where from exactly? You could have gotten the wrong version, a version compiled with QT_NO_DEBUG, etc.

You should probably wait for milo christiansen to add it to the package.

P.S. To Rman: Why do you surround your posts with periods?

To milo christiansen: You seem to have quite a few Wz related projects going, out of curiosity do you intend to post the source somewhere at some point in time? (Sorry if you have already answered that somewhere)

Hmm looks like version 4.3.2 which from what I read is compatible with 4.0.x through 4.4.x.

I then took a look with a hex editor and the mangled symbols looked like they were from MSVC, where as the symbol in that error message looks like it probably came from gcc or mingw.
