Always showing oil resources

Post by Per »

In most other RTS games, you do not have to scout to find where additional resources can be found. They are always visible on the map. I think we should do this for skirmish in Warzone as well. Takes away some of the (dubious, IMHO) advantage from players who have played that map before versus those who haven't. It also solves the issue of whether the AI should see the entire map on start (BP and DyDo) or not (AIV and default). What do you people think?

to be or not to be.... that is the question.... O_o

eh... what the heck... why not. but this would imply that you will need to fix the problem when you make the mini map bigger and the oil resources disappear, and that the minimap does not gets to its lowest level when shrinked, it gets 1 size point bigger than the one on round start.

Maybe you should know withing a stating radius... say... 80/100 tiles or so, so in bigger maps you wont know all of the resources but just enough.

or in a crazy idea, why don't you make a resource radar tower, with it, you will find resources on a 100 tile radius without reveling ground, just like the radar detector, that would be interesting, and make it an early research.

It would be good if they weren't blinking constantly like they currently do. Maybe have a dim non-flashing blue orb for that. Otherwise, I support this.

That is a great idea, Per, but I think it would ruin the fun of scouting, especially in campaign. You could (and should) make a ShowAllWells AI function though.

I thought I color coded the oil resources area on the map preview screen? Hmmm...or maybe it was on my TODO list. :...:
and it ends here.

Patch to implement this added in #1087, which also removes the blinking dots for oil and adds constant dots on radar map instead for skirmish. Campaign remains unaffected.

Stick it in for the next beta, if people don't like it, we can remove it before the final release...
and it ends here.

As long as it is toggle-able, as an integral aspect of randomly generated maps is scouting.

That is an interesting point. When we get randomly generated maps, we should be able to turn this off from the map settings somehow.

Edit: Maybe. I am unsure of this. I think I would still prefer to know where expansions are. And I think it would be too much work to support this from AIs as an option.

I tried this new oil things. Well seems its a good idea. But sometimes those little dotes hardly to see on radar mini-map, especially with dark terrain or different radar-terrain mode. I think if to bring back those blue bicons in some cases it would "spam" whole radar (on high oil maps). May be if to make that dote a little bigger and to make it change color so it could be seen on any terrain. :ninja:

If we can't make it stop refreshing oil derricks models, so maybe bring back like it was before and add this "Always showing oil" only to the Radar ? So this feature could already be in 2.3-final. Than may be with time would do the same to terran. How that ?

I have a complaint about this. The feature is nice and I support the intention, but please, my enemies' derricks disappear from my minimap when they build on them, and it's blatantly obvious that they've built derricks there.

The glowing dots need to not disappear when, out of sight, an enemy builds a derrick on it.

I have mixed feelings about this feature, precisely because there's no way to stop that behavior. Per's working on a fix, but I don't think it'll make 2.3.0 final.
