Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
As far as I remember, I downloaded the installer yesterday (Sunday) morning. I downloaded the update patcher, not the full installer, in case that makes any difference.
I downloaded the updater again to check the file size of the install package, and it looks identical to the one I downloaded yesterday.
Rar'd exe attached.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Just a quick update.
I decided to reinstall again, so I downloaded both the updater and the full installer.
After installing from the full installer, the warzone2100.exe has a file modified date of 01 April 2007, 10:08:12
The updater has a file modified date of 31 March 2007, 17:04:16 (although the created date is still 01 April 2007, 10:08:12)
The file sizes are also different:
10.1 MB (10,689,851 bytes) - update
10.1 MB (10,690,363 bytes) - full
So it would appear that there's a discrepancy with the two installers (not that I'm in any way technical in programming matters).

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
I guess I forgot to create new patches after creating the new installer. Will fix that.
Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Well, tried playing MP again this afternoon, and it's crashed again within about 45 minutes of starting (dump file attached).
This is using the 1st April exe.

Do you have any additional information? Something that those two crashes have in common? Eg. the same map or you built the same units or similar?

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
We do tend to play the same map (Sk-SandCastles-T1) each time.
Can't say I've noticed whether I'm building the same thing each time or not. I'll try to keep an eye out for that.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Ok, me and a friend had another bash at 2.0.6 last night. Crashed about 40 minutes later
Can't say whether we were building/researching the same thing again or not. I had some research going, and some things queue'd to build awaiting resources.
My friend's pretty much got to the point where he won't play WZ now MP as there's absolutely no chance of actually finishing the game with either 2.0.6 or the previous 2.0.5 (which actually lasts about twice as long before it crashes).
I can't see any real way of testing this by myself, and without a multiplayer save/load, it's not going to be easy to see if it's something specific that's causing it at this end.
I've attached last night's dump file again to see if that shows the same as the previous one in the hope that helps some.
On a possibly unrelated note, and while I remember, the walls seem to have taken on a very retro colour. They look a funny shade of orangy pink or something now.
One last thing while I remember, and on the offchance it matters at all.
When we play, there's usually the two of us allied playing against six computer enemies with their difficulty bars set all the way to the right.

Indeed this looks exactly the same:
That seems to be broken in 2.0.6. Have a look at: http://wz2100.net/forum/index.php?topic=530.0
The fixed mod can be downloaded from http://download.gna.org/warzone/development/grim.wz
Maybe this even fixes your crashes, but I am not too confident about that.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Yes, I have been using the Grim mod.
I'll see if I can convince my mate to try one last time with that update. Can't say I'm confident it'll fix it either, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Does this crash happen on your both PCs? Or does only one of the crash?
And even though I don't know yet what a "shape" is (had no time to investigate yet) I don't think that a wrong texture could be the cause. So you probably don't need to convince him, since the mdmp will pretty much look like the above 3.
But maybe you want to train rushing. This natural timelimit is probably the best situation to learn it.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
His has crashed, but not as often as mine has. Don't know if he kept his mdmp though. I'll ask him.
I don't think the rushing thing would work for us. We're old and when we play RTS games we like to make the game last. Not into the 'finish the game in 10 minutes' scenario. We build up, then build up some more, then we go and bat the enemy (or die horribly trying)
As a for instance, and average Starcraft game will probably last anywhere from 2 - 4 hours.
I did notice there was a file in My Documents/Warzone 2100 that contained a log of multiplayer sessions. Didn't really look at it though to see what it contained. I've just formatted my XP box to give it a clean lease and make sure there's no odd software causing WZ to crash, and forgot to save it first. If it's of any value, and if I can get my mate to play one more game, I'll upload it here.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Ok, I managed to convince my mate to have another go.
This time, it's him who's crashed. Again, within an hour of starting the game. The first game we tried actually didn't crash .... I got overrun after around an hour and died in a big splatty mess
We then tried again, and this time it was my friend who crashed out. After I quit out of the game, mine had a crash message too.
Rar file attached with my dump file, his dump file, and the netplay file that gets created in 'My Documents'.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Same location, but different shape:
Because this log seems a bit odd with 2 players researching the same things at the same time...
Maybe the logging function is even broken and the logs thus not reliable.

Because this log seems a bit odd with 2 players researching the same things at the same time...
Maybe the logging function is even broken and the logs thus not reliable.
Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
This was us 2 against 6 computers.
I'd have assumed that the two human players would be 1 & 2 (as they're the 1st and 2nd position in the MP hosting screen)? So if I'm reading that right, it's players 1 & 5? 5 would have been a computer.

Re: Multiplayer: Crashing out (need instructions on data collection)
Yes, I'm necro-threading this ;p.
After a month and a half (and yelling at UPS), I've finally gotetn a new power supply for my computer. My old one was... I'm sure anyone who has put a computer together can imagine suitable horror stories.
Anyway, with my system back up, I was going to give a few more runs at trying to figure out why this was happening. First, however, I took a look at my System Services manager...
There's one in there called "error reporting service" that has been disabled. In fact, looking down the list, it appears about 2/3 of the avialable services are not set to run.
My question is: is there any specific service(s) necessary to be running for a "crashing" warzone to be able to even support an in-game dump? Is this why I wasn't able to get any files out of the failing program?
