Are you sure? I'm pretty sure we fixed it fairly recently. Do you have the latest version of any branch? Nightlies don't count, they haven't been maintained in ages.

its not the distance from the target, its the distance from the commander.
hit shift+f12 and you will see that assigned units stay within the sensor limit or the commander.
also, this was fixed in 2.2.1. as zarel said
dunno if the commander gained visual range, lost firing range or if the flamers gained range.
