I dont think it was intentional but the research tree is changed for version 4.1.0, mortar autoloading 2 cannot be researched until Neural synaptic research brain mk2 has been completed. Also EMP Cannon research is available to research after Neural synaptic research brain mk2 is completed without needing to research any energy weapons.

Campaign and multiplayer went through heavy balance efforts. Mortar Autoloader Mk2 depends upon the Pepperpot and the first Mortar autoloader. EMP Cannon requires the 3rd and final sensor upgrade and the penultimate research upgrade (EMP weapons come much earlier than before).

The new re-balancing is bad. I made several single player matches against the ai on the easiest level and lost them all. Every single experience I gained since 1999 are gone. Whatever I try to repulse attacks does not even come close to what it should do. On the other hand the ai takes doesn structures with whatever weapon in milliseconds. Even the super large cannon is unable to kill a tank within three or five shots. Hellstorms, useless also. Tank killers, source missiles, nothing seems to stop enemy tanks anymore.

It's not clear to me: Do you talk about skirmish or the campaign? Perhaps the AI is better than you remember. There have been 5 major balance changes to multiplayer since 1999 (at least that is what is said on the forum) so I have doubts strategies from then worked sufficiently even a few releases ago.themac wrote: ↑15 Jul 2021, 20:32 The new re-balancing is crap. We made no changes to tank cannons, gauss cannons, tank-killer, or Scourge missiles that would result in ineffectiveness against tanks. In fact, only the tank Hyper Velocity Cannon had its splash damage removed cause it has superior range and is rather light. Hellstorm was actually made stronger and comes earlier too.

I didn't say I wasn't playing since 1999. =P Maybe its a bug where on the easiest difficulty it uses the hardest or something?

In this version the mortars and howitzers are useless, the cannons and machine guns are invincible, this is the worst version, many players have stopped playing, you have ruined this game ...

Actually after a long time I came back to this game. I recall way back when that mortars and howitzers was all that was made, and the game became 'who's artillery came first'

There's certainly a hell of a difference between 3.3 and 4.1, as in I played a skirmish map in 3.3 just an hour or so ago, and then the same map, same settings, with 4.1. 3.3, easy (because I set it to easy). 4.1? So, guess I'll stick to 3.3 and maybe try a later 3.x, but 4.x is a no-go. Sadly.
(Your "insane should now be a challenge [=impossible?] for even the most experienced player" hints at a general increase in difficulty, as these things usually go. But luckily you don't really need users…)
