Updated to master 714399b
Testing beta 1 again
All things I noticed in my last test are now working as it should be (except the repaired buildings after saveload).
Now I could only start 4 transports. What would be perfect if it's possible that you can start a fifth transport with starting countdown and get after about a minute the sound warning that the transport get attacked with then stopping countdown. That would be exact like the original setting.
The droids in Beta 2 are just some generic already placed units on map and I don't see any previous code that replaces them.
Yes they were always generic with no experience.

Per committed with commit 4b91398 a protection of cheat mode after reloading a saved game. That didn't worked in my test. I was in cheat mode, saved a game, reloaded it and I had again to do the special key command to get back in cheat mode.

Could you please run the game with command-line option '--debug=wz' (no quotes), and then post the log?

That should output all the resolutions in the order the game detects them, and help narrow down why that earlier patch broke things for you.
sure quick question though how do i do that ? Do i just create a short cut and then put --debug=wz on the end ?
Yep! (Assuming you are running Windows.)

EDIT: And just to clarify, you just need to start the game until the main screen appears - you can then exit. The log entries I'm interested in are written before the main screen displays.

I thought that was how it was supposed to work...?

Used to be possible to enter cheat mode without the special key command if you had loaded a savegame.
Thats the description of the commit. And I understand it that way, that you stay in cheat mode when you save the game and reload it. And that didn't happen. When I reload a game that I saved in cheat mode I'm no longer in cheat mode but have to enable it again with the key command. And that's what it was before the commit. If that is what it should do I don't understand the necessity of the commit if it changes nothing.

Alpha 09

Once again this is causing me issues while the level plays fine the problem I have is the time limit, thus far the only way I have been able to complete this level within the 40 minute time limit is by steam rolling it with lancers, or by cheating and freezing the timer every other method I have tried is to slow, and I run out of time.

I even tried seeing if upgrading my units while actually playing the level rather then before taking off would help but I can't say that I found that to be any quicker.

When I recycle and upgrade my first 2 squads before taking off usually I have about 27 minutes left on the clock by the time I'm ready to take off

If I only upgrade only my first squad and leave the other 2 to build while actually playing the level usually I have around 30 minutes left on the clock by the time I'm ready to take off.

So as you can see the time loss is unavoidable unless you cheat and that 3 minute difference is simply the difference between upgrading just 1 squad before taking off or upgrading 2 since I always upgrade my third squad while playing the level to save time.

Unfortunately 30 minutes isn’t enough time to complete this level, if you are going for the total annihilation victory, unless you rush and simply brute force your way through it with lancers if you try to use anything other than lancers then you won't have time due to the fact that they don’t deal damage fast enough, with the 40 minute time limit currently it's only real feasible to brake in to there base grab the artefacts and evacuate

In part I think the issue here has to do with the way this part of the game is set up because you automatically loose around 4 1/2 to 5 minutes just researching composite alloys mk 2 and the python heavy body since you are unable to do that on Alpha 08.

You then loose around another 3 to 5 minutes upgrading your first team of units since you are unable to do that on Alpha 08 either and unfortunately this is an unavoidable necessity because with the constant stream of units coming from there base medium body units simply take damage to quickly.

Then of course every time you bring in reinforcements you have a 3 minute wait so to bring in 2 full squads of units you are looking at a waiting time of 9 minutes.

Yes you could do this with a single squad but you will have more control over the situation if you use 2 squads plus its good experience for which ever team is on guard duty.

So all in all you are loosing around 10 to 15 minutes simply waiting for things, and that doesn't even include the time required to do research and to recycle and rebuild one of your squads so that you don’t have to wait for units to drive down from your base to intercept the enemy tanks on alpha 10

So given all of that you can see why I'm of the opinion that the time limit for this should be increased to 55 minutes, now I know that we seem to have a difference of opinion on this one but realistically I don’t see how it's currently possible to go for the total annihilation victory because you don't have enough time unless you simply rush your way though it with lancers, and that's not a good way to go about things because when you rush you make stupid mistakes.

I don't understand why it last so long for you to produce these two squads. For composite alloys mk 2 you need 2:51 for research and for python body 1:54, so that are about 5 minutes. And with five factories it took 1:10 for me to produce my first squad with one commander, two trucks and seven lancers. That means I could start the first transport with 33:45 minutes on the clock. That transport landed with 33 minutes left and my second squad with one commander, one truck and eight lancers could start with the second transport with about 32:45 minutes left. And during the three minutes this transport need to arrive I could produce the rest of my troops.

With my first squad I move east to fight the two scavenger bases in the south, with the second squad I move north to the northern scavenger base. When I start to attack the northern scavenger base my third transport lands with 26:30 minutes time left. Starting now the fourth transport means, that with 23 minutes left you have two squads with ~35 combat units belonging to how much trucks you produce. And that is in my opinion enough time and are enough units to attack the NP from two sides and destroy their base. I think we could talk about giving that stage maybe another ten minutes at normal difficulty what are more than six minutes at insane difficulty. But that should be enough.

Guess I will play Alpha 9 and see how tough it is on insane difficulty. I just finished Alpha 6 with some Viper lancer/heavy machine gun/bunker buster wheels and a few Cobra medium cannon half-tracks.

Beta 1 now plays a warning sound about the fifth transporter being attacked and then it now does not come to base like originally (still testing it). Now for some reason the player is given the visibility data of an ally. It didn't do that when I first converted these missions...

Ok so here is how I typically go about this level, now I'll grant you this isn't the quickest method, and there are other ways you can go about this but the reason i tend to go about it this way is because of various factors like the vanishing units bug as i previously mentioned, and you have to keep in mind when setting time limits that other players might want to use weapon systems like artillery which are naturally slower then something like lancers so you need to account for that

Anyway here goes first off I'll set the composite ally mk 2 researching while that’s happening I'll recycle all my units save for my builders, I'll then have my builder remove everything on the plateau and then move down to my other 2 repair bays that I left from alpha 06.

While they are on the move I'll have the builders at my main base rebuild the 3 factories, while this is going on composite ally mk 2 should finish and I'll set Python heavy body to research once my builder are done rebuilding the factories I'll recycle them to and around this time the Python heavy body should be close to being finished, so I'll just wait.

Once it’s done I'll build 2 commanders a scanner and 2 builders, I'll then send my most experienced commander to the southern entry point for the new paradigm tanks on alpha 10 I'll set the 5 rally points to the commander and I'll build 18 heavy body tracked lancers, in preparation for alpha 10.

Once they are done, I'll reset the rally points and build 18 heavy body half track lancers, once done I'll send my second commander, 8 of my lancers and a builder to get onboard the transport.

While they are boarding I'll rebuild the other 2 builders and 2 repair trucks I'll move all 5 rally points to the northern entry point for the new paradigm tanks, on alpha 10 and I'll set my factories to make 18 heavy body wheeled bombards.

By this time I usually have about 27 minutes left on the clock, and I'll save and launch upon landing I'll call in my other 10 haft track lancers, while I'm waiting for them to arrive I'll have my commander and 8 lancers move to the east and wipe out the scav base, and I'll have my builder build a repair bay, by the time I have knocked out the scav bases units will start to come from the new paradigm base so if they need it I'll have my units quickly get repaired and then move into position just north of the southern scav base behind the ridge line to block the new paradigm units from getting to my drop zone

Now this is usually where I'll have a bit of a wait while I wait for my scanner and 9 bombards to arrive, once they arrive, I'll call in the other 9 bombards and I'll have my scanner and 9 bombards move to the north and take out the northern scav base, once that is done I'll bring them back to my landing zone around this time the other 9 bombards should be arriving, then I'll send my scanner and all 18 bombards to the east and up on to the ridge line overlooking the new paradigm base and I'll knock out there factories, now if everything goes smoothly then this should only take a few moments.

Although this is not always the case because of issues with the game, what do I mean? due to the fact that the ridge line is very narrow sometimes it can be really difficult to get my scanner to move along it because when I click to tell it to move along the ridge line it thinks I have clicked down in the new paradigm base so it keeps trying to go down into the new paradigm base instead of doing what its told and moving along the ridge line plus I can't tell it to hold position so again it likes to try and countermand my orders due to the way guard works which again can mess things up because it moves out of position when trying to take down there factories.

Anyway once the factories are down I'll have my bombards move down off the ridge line and start moving west and knock down there cyborg factory, turrets and repair bay, as I'm doing so this will usually trigger there drop ship reinforcements, any way once my bombards are finished I'll send them and scanner back to my LZ and I'll recycle them and rebuild them as heavy body tracked lancers and a commander in preparation for alpha 10.

I'll then have my lancers commence clean up removing everything that’s left, and collecting the artefacts, and usually I'll leave 1 turret standing around there drop zone so that my lancers continue to rank up while I wait for research to finish, now typically it's somewhere around this point where I normally run out of time, this changes a bit depending on what troops the new paradigm send in on there drop ship and how much resistance I face because there heavy body tracked tanks can take about a half dozen lancer hits before going down which makes destroying a drop ship full of them an excruciatingly slow process even with 18 lancers, plus you will usually take quiet a bit of damage because on insane there cannons are almost as powerful as lancers.

Personally I'm of the opinion that the armour on there heavy body tracked cannons units is a bit to tough and they are part of the reason I have so much trouble with alpha 12, because when there are a lot of them I can't kill then quick enough, but that’s a discussion for later on

My biggest issue with this level is the unavoidable time loss at the start doing the research and rebuilding your first squad, because even if you use a different method to complete the level and even if you rebuild all your other units while actually playing the level, you are always going to loose somewhere around 10 minutes at the start and this is completely unavoidable, so when you take that view point the time that you actually have to complete this level is 30 minuets not 40 and you need at least 40 minuets to actually play the level making for a minimum total time of 50 minuets, however just to give players a little leeway I'd recommend adding an additional 5 minutes making a total time of 55 minutes, now i probably don't actually need 55 minutes i reckon i could do it somewhere between 45 and 50 minutes even using the slower method of using artillery, I'm not exactly certain because the end of level screen doesn't seem to display the correct mission time upon completing alpha 09 though this could be just an effect of freezing the timer with the toggle time cheat I'm not sure.

The problem in my opinion is not the difficulty of the level it’s the fact that I'm wasting a lot of time doing the research and upgrading units and realistically this is something that should already be well under way before I even start alpha 09 because I usually complete alpha 08 so quickly that I have like 15 to 20 minutes where I'm not doing much of anything and that’s time I could be spending upgrading my units therefore avoiding this issue completely.

To me it makes no sense that you have to wait till alpha 09 before you can research composite ally mk2 and the python heavy body when you collect the artefact for composite ally on alpha 08, I really don’t understand the logic behind this one and personally I'm of the opinion that this is simply a stupid design choice that should be fixed, failing that, the next best thing is adding at least another 10 minutes to alpha 09 to account for the time lost doing the research and upgrading your first squad to heavy bodies.

Now as I already mentioned this is not the quickest method and I could simply forgo using artillery and instead use say heavy machine guns and then once my heavy machine guns have taken down the northern scav base simply go for a direct combined assault with both squads at once and just brute force my way past there defences and all there units and simply flatten them that way certainly that would be faster but that is a high risk approach which is likely to result in heavy causalities and since units take so long to rank up taking causalities is something that should be avoided, plus that tends to be a very messy way to do things due to pathing issues so i personally prefer to take a slightly slower albeit more controlled approach, I mean this is campaign mode not skirmish mode after all.

Now I understand why you are talking about giving the stage more time. And I agree with you that the saveload bug with in away-missions produced units and the behaviour of the hold order (which doesn't deserve this name  ) should be two of the most important things to be fixed. The main point why I have a different opinion about more time is that as far as I understand the reason for implementing a new difficulty is to force the players to think about their strategies and also to force them to change them. And with all that time that you want to add to the stage the players can do everything the same way they always did. And then insane difficulty makes no sense in my opinion.
Bethrezen wrote:you have to keep in mind when setting time limits that other players might want to use weapon systems like artillery which are naturally slower then something like lancers so you need to account for that
I think there is no "natural right" to use always artillery. There are stages where artillery is more usefull and there are stages where artillery is less usefull. And in alpha 9 on insane artillery is obviously less usefull. One thing that helps me at that stage is maybe the personal goal I posted a few posts before. I try to get as many hero units at the end of the game as possible. And because of that I play for example the whole alpha campaign with 30 combat units to concentrate the experience. So all my lancers in alpha 9 are minimum veterans, some are specialists. And with tracked propulsion and assigned to a commander they are strong enough to deal all damage that the scavengers and the NP do to my units. The price for that is, that they are very slow. But still fast enough to solve alpha 9 in time. I can even afford it to let the southern scavenger factories alive and fight the produced units to gain more experience.

With the 55 minutes you are talking about for alpha 9 you would be nearly at the time setting for normal difficulty. And if any player insists on using artillery he can change the difficulty during the game. He can change from insane to normal for stage 9 and go back to insane for stage 10. And if he don't want to do so he is forced to change his strategy and the units he use. And that's what insane difficulty is made for.

As I said we can talk about giving the stage 10 more minutes in normal (what are 6:40 in insane) and that's more time than you need for the research.

Why don't you build a repair bay where your bombards stand and recycle them there? I think your builders are faster than your bombards and you could save time that way.

When master d67b34e is available the fifth transporter should never arrive at Beta base and you will hear about it being under attack. I also attempted to fix older save files affected by enemy bases not being eliminated correctly when loading them.

Alpha 9 on insane difficulty: It's not that bad once you take out the factories/LZ and I only started the mission with ~23 minutes on the timer (I built a large amount of defenses to prepare for Alpha 10). I build groups of about 3-4 repair facilities and let the heavy machine gun/lancer group gain experience (attached to a commander) while I slowly start moving closer into the base and building another batch of repair facilities. Most of my units were still Cobra half-tracks with only my best units using Python body.

Alpha 12, Wow. There is no way you are going to brute force the New Paradigm on this mission (on insane anyway). One good thing is that provides a lot of experience while sitting around an array of repair facilities with all my tracked units. ~40 minutes left and I have destroyed the LZ with a group of scorpion bombard hovers attached to a sensor. Going to try moving along the east side of the base with my bombard group before rushing in with a group of lancer/heavy machine gun/bunker buster hovers to take out the factories.

I am looking into fixing the units getting placed at the corner when produced offworld and loading the save file.

And with all that time that you want to add to the stage the players can do everything the same way they always did. And then insane difficulty makes no sense in my opinion.
Firstly that is a faulty assumption insane is simply about providing players with a challenge, and has nothing to do with the way you actually play the game at all and nor should it you should be able to play the game what ever way you like with what ever units you like.

Don’t get me wrong I get where you are coming from, and to a certain extent I do agree BUT… you have to step back and look at the bigger picture here and consider the fact that different people play the game different ways and you need to account for that because if you don’t then what's going to happen when this gets released is that you are going to end up with complaints from players, which I'm sure everyone agrees is not a good thing.

The big problem I see with the position you seem to hold on this is as I have stated before that you are forcing players to rush and you are preventing players from playing the level the way want to with the units that they choose, don’t get me wrong I'm not expecting the level to be easy it is insane after all but neither do I expect to be barred from using all the technologies at my disposal simply because those technologies are slower than others which is more or less exactly what is happening here.

The ironic thing about this is that this situation only exists because of another bad design decision on alpha 08 which forces players to wait till alpha 09 to research composite ally mk2 and python body, when you pick up the artefact that unlocks this tech on alpha 08 and to be perfectly honest I see no justifiable reason for making players wait.

I could understand making players wait if players where some how gaining an unfair advantage that they are not supposed to have but that’s not the case because by the time you have collected the artefact in question the base is already in pieces anyway and all that you need to do is a bit of clean up so to me the decision to force players to wait till alpha 09 before being allowed to research this technology makes no sense this is not alpha 05 where you can't upgrade units because your factories need to be upgraded first, and it shouldn’t be treated that way.

Ultimately the simplest, easiest and my preferred way of dealing with this issue is to simply let players research composite ally mk2 and python body on alpha 08 that way gaining any advantage from that is a matter of skill, and that is something that we should be encouraging, if you are skilled and you can do alpha 8 quick then you will have a bit of extra time to go about upgrading your units if not then you wont and you will have to do it on alpha 09, and if I can deal with the whole upgrade issue at the end of alpha 08 then I wont have to spend that time on alpha 09 and therefore this issue goes away with out having to meddle with alpha 9 at all.

Certainly Alpha 09 is possible using medium units it's just more difficult because they have only a fraction of the health and armour that python units do which means that they take damage more quickly and are more likely to end up being destroyed, its why I usually go the route of bombing there factories with bombards from the ridge line because that is a proven, effective and safe tactic all be it a little slower.

As for building turrets to deal with alpha 10, I used to do that but always found it to be a slow wasteful and ineffective tactic so I figured its probably better to just handle that situation with a couple of squads of heavy body tracked lances set to retreat at medium damage and then just build a couple of repair bays near by to keep your units up although I'm beginning to wonder if it may in fact be better to use half tracks instead of tracks due to the fact that tracked units are so slow yes your half track units take damage more quickly but the trade off is that damage units get out of the way more quickly and more easily and are therefore less likely to get destroyed certainly I know this works better at the northern entry point where you have more room to manoeuvre not so sure about the southern one though I'd have to test that out.

Going to try moving along the east side of the base with my bombard group before rushing in with a group of lancer/heavy machine gun/bunker buster hovers to take out the factories.
Now you see why on my last attempt at alpha 12 I was down to 15 minutes by the time I knocked out there first 2 tank factories don’t get me wrong even with the level of unit production that you are facing off against in alpha 12 its still possible to complete the level you just need more time a lot more time particularly if you are going for the total annihilation victory because the usual tactic of just doubling up on numbers simply doesn't work because you don’t have the space to manoeuvre and going full hover mode doesn't really help either because then all those units that you would otherwise be fighting if you go up the middle path will be waiting for you when you get up to the base which can make it extremely difficult to get in to there base because every time you try you get swarmed.

So far I've not figured out how to get around this in older versions before hold position got remove normally I'd just set up a bunch of repair pads just in front of where you get the hover artefact and then have a squad of heavy body tracked lancers attached to an experience commander park in-between them thus blocking the enemy from getting to my LZ and drawing there fire leaving me free to roam the map with my other 2 squads of units

typically I'd use a squad of hover bombards to take down there turrets and a squad of hover lancers to protect them from hover tank attack although sweeping the map and destroying all there turrets with artillery is a really slow and tedious process because its not particularly effective against bunkers and unfortunately bunker buster don’t really help they are ok for turrets that are on flat ground but for the rest they tend to miss a lot so for those turrets using bunker busters isn't really any faster than using artillery, and unfortunately unlike later on in the game you have really really limited options for dealing with that on alpha 12.

Of course currently this tactic is problematic due to the fact that you can't make your units say still within the safe zone of your repair bays which means that in order to make sure that they stay repaired you are continually having to move them back which is a real distraction when you are trying to take down there base making for an incredibly difficult situation and one that I haven't figured out how to combat yet.

Although once i get back to Alpha 12 I'll maybe try the suggestion that alfred007 made about using a group of cyborgs on a suicide run to get the hover artefact within the first couple of minuets and see if that helps me make progress any faster, because after thinking about it i had another idea rather then going up the west side of there base and then trying to go up the ramp into there base I'm wondering if it might be a better move to simply circle round behind there base and then start picking stuff off with artillery, i know certainly i can get to at least 2 of there tank factories that way and at least 1 of there cyborg factories and i should be able to pick off a bunch of there units that are parked around those factories as well and in theory they shouldn't be able to fire back, the big question is going to be the whole time factor because while artillery might be a relatively safe way to go about this its also an incredibly slow way to go about it as well time will tell, certainly if i can knock off a couple of there factories that would make life much easier as you wouldn't have as much resistance to deal with.

Good stuff because that is an old and really really irritating bug that should have been fixed ages ago.

Even if units simply got moved to your landing zone when the computer looses the co-ordinates of units produced off world instead of in the corner of the map where they can't be recovered unless you fly them in on an away mission that would at the very least be a step in the right direction although it would be better if units appear where there supposed to appear regardless.

I have opted to increase the Alpha 9 timer to 48 minutes (same with hard difficulty) and delay the New Paradigm factory activation some more. Factory throttles are now much more reasonable for the New Paradigm and reflect the average time of ~1-2 minutes on normal difficulty.

As for Alpha 12, I delayed the initial attack near the LZ and made the factories that produce tougher units have slower production times. So it should be somewhat easier to manage on insane difficulty.

Alpha 10

Once again this level is causing me issues, there seems to be some sort of a problem with commanders on this level if you save on alpha 10 and reload.

For some reason when i try to assign units to commander 1 they keep getting assigned to commander 2, which is of course screwing things up for me, have no idea what is going on here but its is a colossal pain the the backside.

The weird thing is this dosn't seem to happen if you play through from alpha 09

I've attached the save.
