How to moding terrain?

What are the possibilities in improving the texture of the terrain?
What is supported besides diffuse textures?
NORMALMAP, SPECULARMAP, SHADERS?

The question is purely out of curiosity.
In the game, the documentation and the AR mod, I did not find examples of using anything other than the simplest textures.

It supports only complete textures that have colors and precompiled shadows/highlights. Nothing more is supported yet.

With the newer releases, terrain modability has taken some steps in the right direction, since shaders are available for terrain as well. However, I have not seen any files defining shader inputs so I assume they are hardcoded.

I remember Vincent said that there was no problem to add support of tangent space normal maps for terrain in master branch. But then he disappeared-_-
I even prepared him a nm texture for testing purposes.
