Black Screen Using 2.3

Post by Nameless »

Hi All.

Personally, I've had no problems running WZ under Pclos 2009, but a fellow board-member (of Pclos) is having trouble playing WZ. His specs (?) are and his specific problem is the following;
2.6.33.3-pclos1.pa
Konqueror: 4.4.3
Intel 4500MHD

KDE Development Platform: 4.4.3
2.6.33.4-pclos1.pae

x11-driver-video-intel-2.9.1-1pclos2010
warzone2100-2.3.0-2pclos2010
mesa-7.5.2-1pclos2010

dmesg | grep drm
[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[drm] set up 63M of stolen space
fb: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver
fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
[drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

It's an OpenGL issue. Intel chipsets & drivers tend to fare poorly here. Not sure how well the frame buffer driver does OpenGL, but I am suspicious.

Things to try:

Turn off compositing window managers & desktop effects (compiz, kde4 effects, etc)

Update video driver. Manufacturer's drivers usually do OpenGL better than open source. (yeah, I know - sacrilege!)

Turn down hardware acceleration.

It's a 4500MHD. When we say "Intel fares poorly", we're talking about three generations ago, not latest and greatest... :|

Updating manufacturer's drivers should be enough.

For Intel on Linux, the open source drivers are the manufacturer's drivers.
