it keeps crashing and crashing and crashing

Post by Ettan »

god damnit ! .,.so i just played this game for the last time maybe. it crashed...again. ive played maybe 10 multiplayer games. and i think at least half of them crashed. its so annoying. same thing with skirmish games...and same thing with previous version, 2.2.2, so either i get help here and fix it somehow or i drop this game for good. which sucks because i like the game. ok enough with the bitching and moaning.
im not sure exactly what triggers the crash, i havent noticed it crashing after doing something specific, bulding something etc.

ive got an amd athlon 64 dualcore 5600+ 2800mhz
2gb ram
nvidia geforce 8600gt. not the latest drivers i guess, if that matters

stderr.txt was empty

warzone2100.rpt contained this

Erm, that doesn't look like the whole .rpt file. Where's the rest of it?

Then it's probably a driver issue. Get better drivers.

I got a Geforce 7600-GT which is very similar to your 8600 if you think about it...(same OpenGL compatibility issues) and the Game was crashing for me a TON until I totally Reloaded all the Drivers for it and removed some kind of unknown device affilalted with it. To do this right though, you need to Boot up windows in Safe Mode just like you were removing a Kernal virus...

...A general question for anyone else... Why isn't WZ using DirectX?? I thought there was some option somewhere to make it render Software Layer? (with DualCores and that much RAM, he could probably even run TRUNK version on DX-7 compatibility mode, lol...)

We got rid of DirectX and software support because no one had the time, expertise, and inclination to support them.

...no, the MAIN reason was because no one had the time, expertise, and inclination to support them.

The easy way to see that this is the main reason is that if we did have someone with the time, expertise, and inclination to maintain a DirectX branch, it would certainly be accepted into Warzone, regardless of whether or not it was cross platform.

I somehow doubt this. The codebase would turn into ifdef hell.

That sounds correct to me.

I think Zarel is thinking about the old software renderer?
This is a waste of space. Something important should be here.

@ Lav: I would agree and only add to that an additional commitment by the WZ Project to NOT use proprietary software of any sort even with the recent exception provided by Eidos. That is - ONLY OSS resources will ever be used.

@ -Kosh-: I would guess the same if somebody was willing to give me a hundred bucks to read what Zarel had in mind definitively. O_o

Not to add gas to this, but isn't it true that OpenGL is the only truly Open-Source rendering 'ware' that is still widely supported cross-platform? ...Everything else has to run through Wine or whatever b/c M$ won't stop playing 'Empire2.0'...
And that's a good enough reason right there b/c "the Project" is all about embracing open source? (if I'm reading this correctly)

I may not have been there for the fight, but regardless, the reason we currently don't have a DirectX renderer is because of lack of a maintainer.
-Kosh- wrote:I somehow doubt this. The codebase would turn into ifdef hell.
...? Although we're starting to use OpenGL directly in a few places where we shouldn't, they can be abstracted out.
-Kosh- wrote:I think Zarel is thinking about the old software renderer?
Similar arguments apply to both renderers.
