Can we have text come up instead of the heart or some message more intuitive to notify people that someone else is also researching the same item. Its quite frustrating and really difficult to explain to noobs on the fly: eg:

Stop researching the same thing as me! Half the time they have no idea what you are talking about...

I guess it's not such a big issue, but it would be nice if the UI could make it more clear what is going on...

Maybe we could show hints in the loading screen, for example :
In order to show friendship towards your teammates, you can research technologies marked with a heart in their colour
