Attack target type toggle

Post by Bethrezen »

Hi all

I’m not sure how tough this would be to implement but how about adding a toggle switch so that you can set units to only attack certain types of target if you have ever played dawn or war you will know the sort of thing I’m talking about

A switch where you can set units to only attack building or units or set to attack everything now in dawn of war this isn’t really needed but in warzone because of the way weapons are specialised to be effective against certain types of targets I think this could be quite helpful especially for weapons like bunker busters which do almost nothing to anything except buildings because as it is right now bunker busters are all but useless because they only get one shot and have the irritating habit of wasting it on units

Mastering dow 1 I know exactly what you mean, the stances are F1-F5 correlating to: Hold ground stance, Stand ground stance, Burn stance (preferred to attack buildings), Cease fire stance (this is a great stance combined with infiltration) and attack stance. My vids still exist here - > http://www.gamereplays.org/soulstorm/re ... it=clicked my player name was "arnold judas rimmer" among 20 other accounts. Perhaps you might recall names like: Banana_Brothers, Hello_I_am_new,[IHOP]_pwned, you_rest_in_pieces. Anyhow..

I'd argue that stances in dow are essential but lets not stray, Warzone does provide a unit option menu to select i.e. Hold fire, return fire and Hold position or Pursue. Therefore you could get a group of Bunka bustaz and wack em on hold fire till buildings are in sight. Hmm a switch though would have to be added to the unit menu on "building preffered" selection, perhaps one new line added for primary target type: cyborgs, tanks, building

true but in the case of bunker busters that really doesn't help its fine if i want to take out a specific target i just tell em to hold fire and then control them manually but lets take beta 7: capture nasda control as an example of where this doesn't work

now as any one who has played that mission will know 75% of the stuff you have to take out is turrets or buildings now the most efficient way to do this level is with a group of bunker buster units as they don't have a lot of ground troops but there's just one issue

instead of targeting the building and turrets bunker busters will target units first which i don't want them to do since bunker busters have little effect on units now i could set them to hold fire and control them manually but that means i cant do anything else not to mention they have the annoying habit of firing to meany shots at targets any way thus wasting time so the ideal solution here is a new 2 new stances in addition to the ones we already have one to make units only attack units and one to make units only attack building and turrets

this way you can set up one group of units with anti armor weapons and set them to only attack units and set up a second group with bunker busters and set them to only attack buildings and turrets and in so doing it simply gives you a little more tactical flexibility and makes some of the weapons like bunker busters which are other wise useless under automatic control more useful

another possible way to handle this is to simply make it so that weapons auto fire will target enemy units/structures/turrets in order of precedence so anti armor weapons will target units first anti cyborg weapons will target cyborgs first and anti building/turret weapons will target buildings and turrets first unless the user overrides it and tells the units to attack a specific target

this however in my opinion is a sub optimal solution for a couple of reason first its inflexible, second its difficult and complex to code given the number of weapons in the game and given there various strengths and weaknesses against certain types of target and third it could lead to player confusion

so simply adding a couple more stances would i think ultimately be simpler to implement and give the player more control over there units which would make for a better game play experience and more tactical play especially if the pathing issue can get sorted out so units stop getting stuck continually especially when trying to retreat for repairs in a narrow areas

And exactly that is the reason, why i like WZ. There is no need to make all automatic. Do you really want to give orders to this group and a second order with special targets to the second group and then a third command for the lancers and so on... and when you finished your orders, sit and watch. No-we have enough commands to select and to give different commands. Thats my opinion. I want to play, to be active and not only to type in some commands and thats it. Sorry, i hope you can understand, what i want to say. My english makes people nervous
In case the WZ-game ends in a draw , the game winner will be determined by penalty shoot-out.
