I experimented a bit with the unfold script for blender 2.49 and this is what I came up with :)
Please enjoy and post your results here if you have a go at it ;)

OMG! That looks so cool!
I can't wait to do it with some of my favourite models :D
I'd better learn blender first though...

You should make plastic parts to paint and build, like Airfix :D

Thanks guys :)
I guess it's theoretically possible to unfold higher-poly models , but they easily get very complicated and you'll have a really hard time folding and glueing them into shape. This one already took long enough to put together. The old models are actually quite suitable for making paper models because of their simplicity.

About plastic parts: I have actually been thinking about putting my hipoly models for sale at shapeways, a very nice 3d printing site. They can print models in materials like polyamide, stainless steel, or a full color gypsum based material, with precisions of up to 0.2mm. Only problem is that, since we're doing teamwork, some of my models are based on other peoples work, although I guess I could simply put my markup fee to zero on those models (the pricing consists of a material fee as well as a royalty markup fee which the user can freely set to anything he wants)...

3d printing is of course not as cheap as mass production molding, but you can get fairly small models for a few euros/dollars. If people are intersted I could propably upload something :)

Awesome, this sounds pretty cool!
Only thing is, I live in the UK, so shipping may cost a bit more for me :stressed:
Oh well, if you make some more I could by loads and save on P&P!
Talking of making more, what other models do you intend to unfold?

I think I better go to the corrupt-a-wish thread and wish for a printer. :D

A better way to join the wheels to the body is to make a paper "cradle" so the wheels sit flat

|______|
something like that. the horizontal part is glued to the underside of the body and the vertical parts are glued to the wheels.
sorry no picture, i dont have a camera.

True, I didn't realize that the wheels are actually physically unconnected to the body in the game until i had cut and glued most parts, but I didn't want to add any white paper parts at that stage anymore...

It does look a little ugly from below with the cradle, but from above, the side, or the front it looks ok.

My model now sits on top of a pile of cd cases above my computer, looks cool there :) .

Wish granted, but the printer is made of paper, too.

You SO have to make more of these.

Try something with the Vengeance body. 8)

Or, better yet, just start unfolding random bodies, weapons, and propulsions until we can make just about any combination we want. Image

Bug Wheels Gauss Cannon, anyone? :lol2:
