MP cheat, rewriting game code?
MP cheat, rewriting game code?
i was just wondering if this "bug" had been eliminated or not ?
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
It is opensource no way to really stop it, better not to keep bringing this up.
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
can we protect game .wz with password and the password incorrect game will ask to reinstall. if the want source code they can get it from here aren't they?
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
There is no way to stop it just don't play with people who cheat. P.S. What is with your cheating signature
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?

Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
There are ways to stop cheating while keeping the game open source, but unfortunately most of them require owning the copyright to the game, which we do not have.
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
Just wanted to chime in with the fact that keeping any game cheat free without full control of the platform (say a gaming console) is very difficult! The only real way to be sure that I know of is for each client to have knowledge of just what they need to know, and a central server deal with interactions. Games that can throw a huge number of devs at a problem (say WoW) still have issues with hacked clients.
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
BZflag has a very interesting system which you might take inspiration from.
There is an official registration list (the forum name and password), and bzflag servers can choose to accept only people on the list. Players who make a nuisance of themselves can be banned from the list in certain circumstances. While most people have a rotating IP, having to register again
As a player (and as a "cop" on a server) before and after the system was implemented, I noticed it really cut down on cheating and general douchbaggery, though it will always be present in some form. Many servers have "sanity checks" running as well. This would be things like "It takes a theoretical certain amount of time to get to a certain research point. If they have research before that time point, kick them" as well as "If [total oil gathered] < [Research costs + units and buildings] then kick them". The key thing is the host has to be able to know such data. Would probably requite extensive modifications the the code, but it is something to think about.
Incidentally, it also allows for statistics to be formed.

Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
Registration does not curtail cheating, only stops players from using other players names. A daily registration for ppl with dynamic ip is not a very good solution. You comments about jumps in code over a certain amount of time have been discussed many times. Do a search if your interested.Logwad wrote:While most people have a rotating IP, having to register again
Now that might be nice. The biggest gripe people have in multiplayer is picking balanced or equal teams. Statistics might help to do that.Logwad wrote:Incidentally, it also allows for statistics to be formed.
Re: MP cheat, rewriting game code?
Unfortunately, unlike BZFlag, Warzone isn't an MMO, and thus policing the server for cheaters would require a lot of work, and none of the devs have that kind of free time.

utilize the community to help police it?Zarel wrote:Unfortunately, unlike BZFlag, Warzone isn't an MMO, and thus policing the server for cheaters would require a lot of work, and none of the devs have that kind of free time.
