Units assigned to commander won't retreat at heavy damage

Post by Eugen »

Hello! I have the latest version of WZ and there is the following problem. Units assigned to a commander do not retreat at heavy damages, though I ordered them to. I ordered a command turret to retreat at heavy damages and assigned units to it . I checked and everything was ok: all units were set to retreat at heavy damages. But when it comes to battle, units that are badly damaged don't retreat. I have to rightclick the damaged unit manually and order it to retreat. Help me please to solve this problem.
Thanks!

P.S. I am playing Hardcore mod campaign and using time cheat.
Currently running warzone2100-master-20180928-122314-de6b592_x86_portable.

I'm in the same situation, except I am playing the campaign. So sad to see units I shepherded for so long just go like lemmings...

Sorry :| I just didn't see that a new version had been released. I run 2.2.3 with hardcore mod.

Could it have something to do with having the units assigned to the commander having their own hotkeys? I only think of this because I was able to get them to behave properly and it coincided with a re-working of hotkey assignment.

Nope, this is rather a matter of messed up commander scripts. For some reason the commander skips back to default settings now and then. Pumpkin never got the commander unit to work properly and this is one of it's issues.

Acha! Is there any hope of fixing it? I'm no programmer, but I would be happy to help, especially since that is a fairly crucial part of the game.

Actually, since that we are talking about fixing commanders, I have some suggestions.

Can it be arranged so that you only select the entire commander's group when you click on the commander itself?

Can it be easier to unassign units from a commander? Perhaps add a button to the commander control panel that releases all units.

Also, it would be nice to have a graphical representation of the experience you have cued up by recycling.

Selecting the command group only by selecting the commander is not feasible, i think. It is simply to difficult to hit the commander itself. Finding and selecting him in a larger group will take to long to be effective.

Anyway, before adding any new stuff to commanders, the devs will surely want to fix the existing issues. And these are legion. I'm not even sure if that is on the schedule anytime soon, since few people use commanders and there are more important things that need some attention.

Could it be put on a to-do list to make it easier to select individual units, tell them to do something independently of the command group, but still stay affiliated with the commander? Triple click could work very nicely. Its just that sometimes you want certain units in certain places, and as things stand, they just act as a mob.

That's the idea behind the commander. It makes units work together on a task. That they appear as a mob blocking each other and most of the time do not even align properly with respect to their weapons range or use formations are further commander-issues.
What would you want an individual unit to do apart from the rest of it's group? Only thing i can think of atm is having a bunker buster kill a certain defensive structure whilst the rest of the group deals with field units in the vicinity. The obvious solution is not assigning such special units to commanders.

You would want to be able to select individual units in a variety of situations. You may want to peel a couple of tanks off to halt a flank attack, or to set up an ambush/take advantage of terrain.

Or, perhaps you are in an away mission, repair tanks have died and you really don't want that low-health unit up front while you fend off NP as you wait for reinforcements. In this situation you have turned off the auto-retreat because you need every gun and don't want your units traipsing across the hostile map. (Does it sound like I have been in this position?)

you just hold CTRL to do that.
select individual units that is.
pretty sure you can hold crtl & drag a box over them too.
its pretty easy when you know how.

Thanks for the info, I'll try it out (though I am wondering if it causes the units to be disassociated from the commander).
