I read that the only thing limiting us with the particular connection that they're talking about in the article, is being able to convert the bodies signals into signals a computer can understand. I heard this in an article about prosthetics. Soon it will be possible to operate a prosthetics just as if it were your own limb, provided the prosthetic can understand the signals the nerves give it (the same nerves that used to be connected to the limb or the muscles that controlled the limb.)
