What is the difference between unknown droids in version 2.3.9 and non-existent droids in ver 3.1 ? Some players consistently have around 50 to 300 of them every game. That is just one player, and I've seen as many as 3,000 for one player. Are these units put into play? Why even send them to the host, why not just keep them at the client?

Are you referring to the "ghost" droids visible in the Droid Debug menu in multiplayer? These used to be droids defined in the campaign and the starting force menu.

It's been a while since I've looked at these, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Each player was:
  • Player 0 - Force Editor droids (typically viper/cobra bodies with MG, Cannon and Minipod weapons). These have now been removed IIRC as they weren't actually used.
  • Player 1 - New Paradigm templates
  • Player 2 - The Collective templates
  • Player 3 - NEXUS templates
  • Player 4 - Multiplayer AI templates (used by what is now called NEXUS AI)
  • Player 7 - Scavenger templates
There also seems to be a smattering of other templates, for example I believe Player 6 has a Transporter template.

Regardless, these droid templates are harmless and are overwritten if the player slot is used by a human player. Specifically, the templates are replaced by a Truck template by the rules script (if you have the Git version, see warzone2100/data/mp/multiplay/skirmish/rules.js )

I'm not 100% sure about the odd player templates for 5 and 6. They may have been placed in there to help the developers spawn droids they wanted to test.
