Post by Rommel »

Excuse me, but I can't seem to find the tech tree! I used to just google to it, but I think the link died with the site change. Some direction would be appreciated. thanks!

Any word on this please? Is there somewhere I can find the guide?

http://guide.wz2100.net/

Has been down for a long while and normally when I am lauding the goodness of WZ to peeps I like to show them the awesome depth of the tech tree! I also, from time to time, like to try some different research approaches and without the tech tree this is a bit convoluted :(

Thanks for any advice you can give on this matter!

It was disabled, as has been mentioned.
It is in the process of being updated. See http://developer.wz2100.net/ticket/4003 for progress.

If you want to generate it yourself, feel free, the source is available.

So let me get this right - you take something down that works completely fine because an update is being "worked" (4 months in and counting) on. Why not leave the old guide up while working on the new one?

Now if a new player comes to me wondering about the tech tree and such, or an old player for that matter that just wants to play a game (ie he is not a developer, nor interested in developing) I am supposed to say "If you want to generate it yourself, feel free, the source is available".

I find it strange that you can just pass this off as "If you want to generate it yourself, feel free, the source is available", yet give no instruction on how to do this... ie

"The guide is currently down, if you want a guide to this game you need to generate it yourself. You can do so by:

1. Get the source
2. (i am guessing) parse the source (research items) into some kind of array.
3. (i am guessing) Iterate thru this array inside Javascript or some such to build up the guide UI
4. blah blah

But in the end, whatever, I get the idea.

Just to help anyone else out here:

I believe that the "source" that "Staff" is referring to is that which can be downloaded from here:

http://developer.wz2100.net/ticket/4003#no1 in the attachments area.

To use this file you will need a server on your computer or to upload to an existing server as you will need to parse php.

After all this you will find that it is a useless undertaking to even bother because no images are included and things are quite "broken".

And after all this it is likely that the fault is mine because I did not read the public "mention" about it, which was apparently sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters.

It had incorrect data, that was giving players the wrong information.
It was also written in something that is hard to maintain, and had other flaws in the design that I rather not get into here.
Suffice it to say, it was in the site's best interest to pull that down, and wait for it to be fixed.

As for the source, this is where you need to look https://github.com/Warzone2100/.
We were never given instructions on how to run it, so, we can't tell you what to do besides what has been said before on that ticket or in the forums.

As far as having a tech tree available, as I said, someone is working on it, and they work on it when they want to.
If you don't like the pace, then pitch in and help.
If you don't know how, then learn, that is how things work in a community driven site.
Berg, Jorzi, NoQ (and lots of other people) all didn't learn how to do things overnight, it was pretty much all trial and error, yet, they kept at it, instead of complaining about it, and now, they are very good at what they do.

You could also use google or bing and find stuff, like this (note, this is also using very old data) http://warzone2100.ivanov.eu/techtree/ or ...
I even found the official(?) WZ tech tree in my archives. (again, VERY old data, and unsupported!), but since it has images of the tech tree units, thought it might help some people out (and I think these are the ones used in the guide we had up)

Locking topic, as nothing more needs to be said.
If you want to contribute to a new tech tree, then open a new thread in the forums, and people can collaborate on the details.
