Developer interview #1 - Giel van Schijndel

Postby DevUrandom » 25 Aug 2007, 15:43

Hello folks!

Recently Kreuvf of Warzone2100.de, the german Warzone fansite, interviewed Giel, developer of Warzone 2100, about his motivation and future plans.
You can read the interview in his Blog.

Keep on the good work Kreuvf. I hope to see more of this.

* A good thing - very interesting.

* After reading I was left with a question of my own -

* "Make more mod-friendly...."

* How so ?

Cheers, /V\I/R\G/I\L/ :)

In that context I meant something like: removing hardcoded limits from the game as much as possible. Also trying to define behaviour in scripts (or other data/resource files) rather than the code itself.

* Shucks, if my understanding is accurate, those would constitute major leverage points in advancing GPMs via moded Unit command ai, commander slaveing ai, and corresponding gui widgets.

* Methinks key to WZs evolution beyond the powerful cosmetic face lift and portability across OSs.

* Sweet.

Cheers, \V/I\R/G\I/L\ :)

* Obviously such a prospect made into a reality excites me.

* Not just in general but very specifically.

* Before the source was liberated I envisioned what I called the "G.C.I.".

* After the source became available and somewhat comprehensible, I realized the "G.C.I." would require some fundamental changes in the source that were well beyond anything I could do.

* So.... It remains a mental construct that may someday be possible. Who can say really with any assurance.....

* Anyhow.....

* Here's how the Global Command Interface was conceptualized at the time I abandoned it, some years back now.

* It is also very much related to a new Threat Analysis Schema

* AND to new WZ Experience & Rank Gpms - Part 1 of 5 parts

* Altogether, makes for some tasty food for thought, perhaps.

Cheers, /V\I/R\G/I\L/ :)

From the new wz wiki:
Second: Durability, never changes...A tank cannot suddenly strengthen the material its made out of simply because its been in battle longer...

I think that's worng.
For exemple: during WWII the allied were stuck agains't the german who had locked themselves into woods.
Artillery had limited range of fire, tanks mobility was reduced and planes couldn't do anything.
The infantry was alone but when they cleared a maze, they got ambushed from another side and some infantry divisions lost 3/4 of their men.

The allied tanks finally used scavenged parts from bulldozers to ride into the woods and increase mobility while at the same time protecting the tank from the trees and bushes.
In the end the allied managed to clear the woods of the germans.

I believe tanks original armor doesn't get stronger, but they can get more armor by using scavenged parts, so their durability should increase.
OR how about 2 health bars ?
1 is the original health bar with the original armor.
the 2nd health bar is the health bar they get from killing ennemy.
Lets say since armor strenght doesn't increase, but they just rather have more (not stronger) armor from the scavenged parts, their armor strenght stays the same but they get additional health reflecting the additional armor.
Of course to fill the 2nd bar they have to get healed, it's not like suddenly in battle they receive additional health.

My 2 cents ^_^
