My best idea here is pretty dumb - in skirmish/multiplayer, change commanders to simply buff surrounding units in a certain radius, like an aura, without any "attach to commander" mechanics.

It was never usable. You just don't accumulate enough experience in a single multiplayer match to make the experience bonuses outweight terrible micromanagement that the command turret performs over your units. Yup, dumping sensitive information into a separate stream (that your *units* don't read) should be possible. But that's quite minor, i.e. it only skews the balance of skills a little, you still need to play almost as well as your opponent in order to win. Scouting is not *that* important in Warzone....

I never noticed this problem with units. That's probably because i almost always use either rectangle selection or hotkeys (control groups, retreat commands, select-all-..., etc.) to select my units. I see that i reduced speed from 1.5x to 1.0x at some point, but that is definitely legal.Even NoQ used it in his walkthrough on youtube (see beta 7 aka sub_2d).
